Training program (patterns) for fixed-wing aircraft

There are three levels of flying skills. Hence, both new and more experienced pilots have then a development potential. The skill levels are:

  • SRP - Student Remote Pilot
  • BRP - Basic Remote Pilot
  • CRP - Commercial Remote Pilot

We consider these patterns suitable for developing flight skills, airspace orientation and "good airmanship", with safety in focus.

The prerequisite to perform the exercises is that the exercises must be carried out under manual control only (GNSS and autopilot is not allowed). The aircraft should have an MTOM between 2 - 6 kg, a wing span between 120 - 220cm and have a piston or electric propulsion.

We experience that the patterns that apply for the CRP level pilot are mandatory, to master safe and productive operations, before a pilot can assign as a pilot-in-command in professional operations.

SRP

  • Take off from the ground (runway) or by hand-deploy and ascend to a safe height of 15 - 25m. The candidate shall decide prior to the take-off what the safe height shall be and communicate this to the instructor / examiner.
  • Maintain the decided height and make a 180 degree turn to the right and return straight and level, make a fly-by along the center-line of the runway (or along an imaginary line) and fly as far as the first leg, then make a 180 degree turn to the left with new fly-by returning along the same center line.
  • Make a 720 degrees turn left in level, with pilot in center, 50 - 70m diameter.
  • Make a 720 degrees turn to the right in level, with pilot in center, 50 - 70m diameter.
  • Make a full landing circuit: Upwind, crosswind, downwind, baseleg, finale and land the aircraft safely.

BRP

  • Take off from the ground with the aircraft head-on (without any danger) towards the pilot.
  • Make four coordinated turns (90 degrees) to perform a square at the same level, and perform the same maneuver in the opposite direction (to the right).
  • Make a 720 degrees turn clockwise around an object with pilot off circle, 50 - 70m diameter.
  • Make a full landing circuit: Upwind, crosswind, downwind, baseleg, finale and landing. The final and the landing should be carried out with the aircraft head-on (without any danger) towards the pilot.
  • Demonstrate a powerless emergency landing from "keypoint".

CRP

  • Take off from the ground with the aircraft head-on (without any danger) towards the pilot.
  • Make a lowpass at the lowest possible speed (whitout instability) head-on (without any danger) towards the pilot. Flaps must be used if the aircraft is equipped with this.
  • Make a horizontal 8-digit, consisting of two continuous 360-degree circles of 50 - 70m in diameter with the candidate standing outside the circles.
  • Demonstrate stable flight at lowest speed (without flaps).
  • Make an ascending 720 degree turn
  • Make a descending 720 degree turn
  • Demonstrate a recovery from a fully developed stall.
  • Demonstrate a recovery from a fully developed spin (if approved for this).
  • Demonstrate a powerless emergency landing at the instructor / examiner's request (at any time during the skill test)

During all exercises

The examiner will also give marks in general "airmanship" during the evaluation. By this means:

  • The candidate acts calmly and concentrated during the exercises.
  • The candidate uses checklists and correctly follows the procedures.
  • The candidate shows safety awareness before, during and after flight.
  • Know the basic provisions of the RPAS regulations (safety distances, maximum heights, and flying near airports).
  • Perform the emergency procedures without hesitation, if an unexpected event occur.
  • Keep the decided level (height) during the exercises to be performedeg. in turns.
